Audience Engagement Research - Sports Illustrated Magazine

Image
The Sports Illustrated Magazine has several social media accounts they use to promote their magazine. These include Instagram, twitter, Facebook, and an online version of their magazine. They have an annual magazine subscription which covers 39 issues for 1 year. I plan to create a subscription policy so that i can make sure I have loyal customers who will come back year after year. Below is a screenshot of the sports illustrated Instagram account. They have over 1 million followers and are a verified account. On this account they promote the newest articles in their magazines in order to attract more customers.

Audience Engagement Research - ESPN the magazine

Image
ESPN the magazine has several social media accounts including instagram, twitter, and facebook. I also plan on creating an account on multiple social media services in order to promote my magazine. Their online version allows their audience to stay up to date with the latest sports news. They also created an ESPN+ app which is a sports streaming service. They host events like the Guardian Credit Union FCS kickoff. In addition to technology related advertisement, ESPN has billboards put up to catch peoples attention.

Audience Engagement Research - Runner's World Magazine

Image
The Runner's World Magazine has social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in order to promote their magazine.  I plan to create a social media account on Instagram for Sota Sports to promote my magazine, and post some of the pictures from 1 of my photo shoots. Runner's World also has an website that acts as an online version of their paperback magazine. Major marathons, pop-up shops, and studio runs are all events hosted by Runner's World. Along with a website, you can subscribe to get weekly emails when a new issue of the magazine is released.

InDesign Class Activity

Today in class we utilized adobe indesign to lay out our 2 page spread. At first, I felt a little bit overwhelmed by the program, but then I realized that it is very similar to Adobe Photoshop. In middle school, I took yearbook and computer applications classes where I learned how to use photoshop. The toolbar on the side of the screen is very similar in both programs. I felt as if indesign was a mix of publisher and photoshop in one. Using the rectangle frame tool it was easy to drag and drop pictures into my spread, as well as organize my article into columns.

My Target Audience

As a group, our target audience consists of teenagers at the high school level who are student athletes. My edition of the magazine would appeal to all genders, as both the girls and boys teams are featured. Those who are personally interested in track as a sport will enjoy the inside look at a high school practice, as well as statistics from this seasons meets. My target audience will be similar to that of Runners World, athletes looking for inspiration and new technique.

Feedback and Revisions

Feedback on my midterm consisted of creating a more organized table of contents as well as establishing more of a house style within my group. All 4 of the people in my group have a similar layout for the cover, but we need to decide on one font for our "signature title". In addition to setting a similar look among the group, we also need to make sure that the font we use is not the default, something we plan to change. For the table of contents I plan on coming up with a better use of white space on the page and creating a list rather than using a table. The next step is using Adobe InDesign to recreate my article pages instead of using a preset publisher layout. All of these changes together will make my project look more professional and realistic.

Use of Conventions

My project uses the conventions of other magazines from the same genre. The cover features a single athlete who is the dominant subject of the page. It it very colorful so it grabs your attention and sparks your interest. Along the side of the featured athlete there is a list of headings of some of the main articles of the magazine, a tactic used in a lot of professional magazines. My magazine represents the social groups of young teen athletes as well as sports fans in general.

Midterm Submission Magazine

Image
For the cover page I used a picture focused on one of the athletes in a Sarasota track uniform. In the bottom right, I placed a picture of a runner taken mid stride. For the title I used a bold font so that it would stand out against the background. Also on the right side of the page, I listed some of the article titles included in this issue, a tactic I emulated from some of my magazine research. The picture on the bottom right is a runner in action to contrast the main picture, a motionless picture. For the table of contents, I still incorporated the school colors, and kept the same title font from the cover. Using a table in publisher, i was able to set up the actual table of contents. In the bottom left corner i added a picture of a runner mid stride while at practice. The long picture at the top right is a low angle shot of the track.  For this page of the the article the topic is an overview of the sport itself. I incorporated an interview with one of th...
