CCR Question #4 Draft

In my project I incorporated In-design graphic design software, and worked with different generation I-phones. For my magazine I used In-design to lay out my 2 page spread. At first, I felt a little bit overwhelmed by the program, but then I realized that it is very similar to Adobe Photoshop. In middle school, I took yearbook and computer applications classes where I learned how to use Photoshop. The toolbar on the side of the screen is very similar in both programs. I felt as if In-design was a mix of publisher and Photoshop in one. Using the rectangle frame tool it was easy to drag and drop pictures into my spread. Once I added pictures, I found the text wrap function and changed the stetting so the text would form around my pictures instead of behind. I used the column function to organize my article into 2 columns making the spread look more organized and conventional. I used the text tool to add branding with my Instagram handle at the bottom of each page. Using the page number t...

CCR Question #3 Draft

Throughout the production of my project, my skills has improved. In terms of photography, I got more comfortable with different I phone cameras. I used an I phone X and 8+. Both cameras function differently and I played around with the different features on both. One thing new I learned how to control was the exposure. While taking pictures of the athletes at the track meets, the weather was constantly changing. In order to get the best lighting i would click the screen to focus on the subject and then slide my finger up and down the screen until I got the best lighting possible. I also tried different angles and shots. Long shots weren't the best choice for this project so I stuck with a majority of wide shots in order to fit the whole athlete from head to toe in the frame. In the beginning I would try to photograph the athletes whenever I they were mid workout. As time progressed I scheduled interviews and then designated photo shoots. The designated photo shoots gave me control ...

CCR Question #2 Draft

Through audience engagement research, I found that a lot of popular sports magazines use multiple social media platforms to gain a following.  Based on my research into the marketing techniques other magazine companies use social media to market their products. I chose to create an Instagram account displaying a few of the pictures from all of the sports we follow. In addition to social media, we will create an website to serve as an online version of the paperback magazine we sell. Once people click on the website link a pop up will ask for their email to get reminders when a new issue comes out. Customers will also be able to subscribe to get a deal on a subscription. Traditionally, magazines are distributed through many ways. One of the most common ways to distribute magazines is at grocery stores. Near the checkout line there is a small wall filled with a variety of magazines, and i plan to place mine in that area. This specific location will be allow my magazine to be seen by...

CCR Question #1 Draft

My project uses the conventions of other magazines from the same genre. The cover features a single athlete who is the dominant subject of the page. A majority of sports magazine picture 1 athlete on the cover of their magazine. I emulated this tactic in my own project because I felt that it it a great way to catch someones attention. Another technique I used get the point across clearly is a bright color scheme. This also helps grab your attention and sparks your interest. Pops of color allow the main picture as well as titles pop out. Along the side of the featured athlete there is a list of headings of some of the main articles of the magazine, a tactic used in a lot of professional magazines. By placing the text off to the side, it allows readers to get an idea of the content of the magazine without covering up any of the main image.  My magazine represents the social groups of young teen athletes as well as sports fans in general. The models for my magazine are all in high sc...

Distribution Research 3

E-books are becoming more popular and are an efficient way to distribute magazines/media digitally. They allow you to multitask as you listen to the information and continue with your normal activities. For example, a website called Audible allows you to purchase and listen to a variety of e-books. As print media gets less popular, attention is focused on the next best thing, digital media. A subscription for e-books can replace the price of a magazine subscription, and allows users to access information immediately. With print magazines, you have to wait for each issue to be released, which can be frustrating.

Distribution Research 2

Image
Runners World magazine has a website, runnersworld.com, which is an online version of the magazine. Distribution through websites is an effective way to spread the word of your products as well as reach a larger audience. A digital version of the magazine allows you to update your information at any point in time, whereas with print distribution, you can only update through a new issue. Today, it is more likely for a person to look up a website than to purchase at a grocery store check out or pick up in a doctors office.

Distribution Research 1

Image
ESPN is a large sports magazine company. They use a variety of distribution techniques in order to endorse and attract customers. Specifically, ESPN has created an app to make it easier for sports fanatics to access the latest stats and schedule updates. This is a very effective technique because it allows the users to go directly to the app rather than opening a web browser each time they want to stream a live event. Creating an app is an efficient way to distribute your product and make it available to a larger audience.

Revision #3

Image
For my third revision i remade my 2 page article in indesign. Using rectangle frame tool, I was able to easily insert pictures into my article and wrap the text. On the first page of the article I made a dominant picture that took up half of the page. On the second page I used 2 smaller pictures to break up all of the text.  I added page numbers as the bottom outside corners and created a large, bold,  title.

3rd Quarter Submission

Image
For my third quarter submission I made a lot of changes to my cover, table of contents, and main article. For the cover, I changed my title font to "hobo std" with my group. It looks less generic and now the whole group has the same font which ties it together. For the table of contents I changed the background to solid black, another format change we made as a group. I rearranged the actual table as well to make it more visually appealing and use some of the blank space. For the main article, I remade the entire layout in indesign. I used pictures and wrapped the text around them to keep the flow of the article. One overall change I made was page numbers, which are located in the lower outside corners of each page.

Revision #2

Image
For my table of contents, I revised many different aspects of the page. I changed the background color to a solid black to help the images and text stand out. The title font now matches that of the cover page (Hobo std) and I enlarged the top picture to expand across the width of the page. I also changed the actual "table" of contents and made it more organised and visual appealing rather than a standard table. I added a line in between the two sides of the table to keep it organized and get rid of the awkward space. In the bottom right of the page i placed page numbers, another new addition to the format.

Revision #1

Image
I revised the title font to make it less generic and give the cover more character. As a group we decided on the font "Hobo std". Everyone in the group now has the same font which keeps them all similar in terms of the layout.

Traditional Distribution

Traditionally, magazines are distributed through many ways. One of the most common ways to distribute magazines is at grocery stores. Near the checkout line there is a small wall filled with a variety of magazines, and i plan to place mine in that area. This specific location will be allow my magazine to be seen by everyone who checks out in that lane. It will draw attention to my magazine and bring in new customers daily. Additionally, companies tend to place ads in social media columns on apps like instagram. Many people have social media accounts which will also bring in lots of business.

Marketing Plan

Image
Based on my research into the marketing techniques other magazine companies use to market their products. I chose to create an Instagram account displaying a few of the pictures from all of the sports we follow. In addition to social media, we will create an website to serve as an online version of the paperback magazine we sell. Once people click pn the website link a pop up will ask for their email to get bi-weekly reminders when a new issue comes out. Customers will also be able to subscribe to get a deal on a year long subscription.

Audience Engagement Research - Sports Illustrated Magazine

Image
The Sports Illustrated Magazine has several social media accounts they use to promote their magazine. These include Instagram, twitter, Facebook, and an online version of their magazine. They have an annual magazine subscription which covers 39 issues for 1 year. I plan to create a subscription policy so that i can make sure I have loyal customers who will come back year after year. Below is a screenshot of the sports illustrated Instagram account. They have over 1 million followers and are a verified account. On this account they promote the newest articles in their magazines in order to attract more customers.

Audience Engagement Research - ESPN the magazine

Image
ESPN the magazine has several social media accounts including instagram, twitter, and facebook. I also plan on creating an account on multiple social media services in order to promote my magazine. Their online version allows their audience to stay up to date with the latest sports news. They also created an ESPN+ app which is a sports streaming service. They host events like the Guardian Credit Union FCS kickoff. In addition to technology related advertisement, ESPN has billboards put up to catch peoples attention.

Audience Engagement Research - Runner's World Magazine

Image
The Runner's World Magazine has social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in order to promote their magazine.  I plan to create a social media account on Instagram for Sota Sports to promote my magazine, and post some of the pictures from 1 of my photo shoots. Runner's World also has an website that acts as an online version of their paperback magazine. Major marathons, pop-up shops, and studio runs are all events hosted by Runner's World. Along with a website, you can subscribe to get weekly emails when a new issue of the magazine is released.

InDesign Class Activity

Today in class we utilized adobe indesign to lay out our 2 page spread. At first, I felt a little bit overwhelmed by the program, but then I realized that it is very similar to Adobe Photoshop. In middle school, I took yearbook and computer applications classes where I learned how to use photoshop. The toolbar on the side of the screen is very similar in both programs. I felt as if indesign was a mix of publisher and photoshop in one. Using the rectangle frame tool it was easy to drag and drop pictures into my spread, as well as organize my article into columns.

My Target Audience

As a group, our target audience consists of teenagers at the high school level who are student athletes. My edition of the magazine would appeal to all genders, as both the girls and boys teams are featured. Those who are personally interested in track as a sport will enjoy the inside look at a high school practice, as well as statistics from this seasons meets. My target audience will be similar to that of Runners World, athletes looking for inspiration and new technique.

Feedback and Revisions

Feedback on my midterm consisted of creating a more organized table of contents as well as establishing more of a house style within my group. All 4 of the people in my group have a similar layout for the cover, but we need to decide on one font for our "signature title". In addition to setting a similar look among the group, we also need to make sure that the font we use is not the default, something we plan to change. For the table of contents I plan on coming up with a better use of white space on the page and creating a list rather than using a table. The next step is using Adobe InDesign to recreate my article pages instead of using a preset publisher layout. All of these changes together will make my project look more professional and realistic.
